The role of a doula

What is a doula?

The word "doula" comes from a Greek term that essentially translates to "a woman who serves." A doula is a non-medical professional who supports the mom and her family through pregnancy, birth, and the "fourth trimester" (up to 3 months post-birth).

Birth doulas support moms and their families during pregnancy and childbirth, helping to develop a birth plan and creating a positive labor experience through advocacy,  comfort measures, and emotional support.

Postpartum doulas provide emotional and practical support post-birth, providing a listening ear, empathy, support with soothing techniques and lactation, help with light housework, and providing nourishing meals.

What are the benefits of having a birth doula?

According to DONA International, research has shown that women who use a birth doula are:

  • 28% less likely to have a cesarean section
  • 31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin to speed up labor
  • 9% less likely to use any pain medication
  • 34% less likely to rate their childbirth experience negatively

What are the benefits of having a postpartum doula?

According to DONA International, research has shown that having a postpartum doula can:

  • Help to reduce postpartum mood disorders
  • Improve breastfeeding success
